Summertime

Warm summer air hits my face
Finally it is here in this space
My cells love the warmth like they have always known
The Atlantic breeze from an African shore
Chitown during this time is my favorite place
The festivals, the concerts, my neighbors grills
In the midnight hour
Thank you God for giving us this
Summertime fun til the hawk returns

Cake order

I had a cake order for Friday that went really well.  My soror, I will keep her name anonymous for her privacy, is the best.  She orders cakes from me all the time.  And I now have the honor of making her son's egg free cakes as well.  He was diagnosed with an allergy to eggs a few years back, and I feel wonderful that she trusts me with her baby's life .  Real talk.  So this order was for a baby shower, chocolate and yellow cakes with fresh strawberries and vanilla buttercream.  I am grateful for my soror, I look forward to making her birthday cake, and if you want a cake go to www.thefifelement.com for pricing and more information.

Memorial Day Cleaning Rush

                                                                    the monster room

We are busy getting our home ready for the holiday.  We are hosting a BBQ for the family, and boy what a task!  First there is cleaning.  Now this is no ordinary cleaning job.  We had one room that was the storage of all junk, boxes, nick knacks, and oddities that was a nightmare to look in.  I have been meaning to clean this room for a couple of years, yes that awful, but with no parties at our house, the motivation just wasn't there to do it.  But when my husband told the family reunion committee they could have there meeting at our house,we had two weeks to get done what took years to make.  Of course, we didn't actually use all 2 weeks to clean, no, no, we did it in 4 days!  But wow, does it look nice now.  So after that monster room, there was still two living rooms, three bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, one kitchen and a bunch of stairs to clean. Whew!
Now it is the day of, and we did all the food shopping this morning, I cleaned the other rooms this morning too, and low and behold, there is a flash flood warning for the county and neighboring counties. Was this all in vain? Will no one compliment me on my beautifully cleaned house?  I was just fine with it the way it was!  Alas, the committee is still coming, the food is in the oven instead of the grill, and I can entertain all summer now that the house is in order.  What a way to spring clean, pressure can be a great thing sometimes. Have a great holiday people!

All of You

So, tonite when we were eating
I saw it in full spectrum
I mean, that part
You thought you were hiding
Well there it was
In full spectrum
And  e’rybody was lookin
Do you know what that felt like?
A stampede of elephants
Trunks held high
Dust even higher
That trumpet that Dizzy couldn’t do
Dashing full force over, inside my stomach
A flame of hell’s intensity
Kindled in my gut
Given oxygen in my lungs
And causing 3rd degree burns
Across my cheeks
And black folks don’t blush
Boy, I saw you in full spectrum tonite
Just full of it
I’m full of you
I think monochrome suits me fine
Cuz all these colors are bleeding together
And it is shit brown
I’ll say it loud
I’m black and I’m proud
But this color you have baby
No longer is warholesque
You got your 15 minutes of fame

No longer Silent

Finding my voice
To explain how I feel
To purge my soul of
Her inner thoughts
Inner desires
Inner fears
Inner loves
How will it sound
When I find my voice
Will she scream and yell and throw a fit
Or will she be hesitant and soft not
Wanting to expunge her pain
What is her tone
Cold &harsh or
Raspy & sweet
Like a honey rolled blunt
How will she say those words
Within her
Like a diamond, clear and cut to the chase
Or like a pebble that let’s water flow
Over it
Around it
Under it
Never getting to the heart of it
Will my voice be Leotyne Price
Or Lauryn Hill
Strong, proud, one to be reckoned with
Or will it be a soft backup voice saying
What she is told and not a note different
If I’m lucky it will be a
Mixture, a blend of voices
Harmonizing sounding as one
Not so forceful that it scares you away
But not so soft you can’t understand
My voice will utter the naked truth
With no apologizing and no regrets
She will not quiver with horror
To the vibration of her sound
She will just be
And be heard
